Wood burning Fireplaces makes a house, feel more like a home, feeling that warm glow during the winter months can be very soothing. Keeping it safe is our main priority. Having your fireplace chimney inspected and cleaned once a year is what The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends.
As wood burns it creates a by product called Creosote. When Creosote builds up it can line the inside of the chimney and catch on fire.
Here are some tips to help prevent Creosote buildup.
- Burn hard woods, Oak, Birch, and hard Maple
- Make sure it is seasoned, meaning, dry. Buy your wood the year before and keep it covered to properly dry out
- When burning your wood, keep the fire burning hot, a smoldering fire will create more creosote, so burn your fire hot
